The Technology
Understanding how UV-C air purification creates safer indoor environments
The Science Behind UV-C Air Purification
Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation at 254nm wavelength has protected public health for over a century, and modern research continues to validate its remarkable effectiveness. Multiple peer-reviewed studies published in Nature Scientific Reports and leading medical journals confirm that UV-C radiation achieves greater than 99.9% inactivation of COVID-19 at doses as low as 3.7 mJ/cm², with complete viral inactivation at 16.9 mJ/cm².
This proven technology works by damaging pathogen DNA and RNA, preventing replication and rendering viruses, bacteria, and mould spores harmless.

A Century of Proven Effectiveness
UV-C technology's effectiveness in pathogen deactivation is not theoretical—it has been proven through decades of real-world application in water treatment. Since the early 1900s, municipalities worldwide have relied on UV-C to purify drinking water, protecting billions of people from waterborne diseases. Today, UV-C water treatment systems are the gold standard in hospitals, pharmaceutical manufacturing, food processing, and municipal water facilities across the globe.
This extensive history demonstrates UV-C's reliability, safety, and unmatched germicidal effectiveness. The same fundamental physics that makes UV-C indispensable for water purification—its ability to destroy pathogen DNA and RNA at the molecular level—applies equally to airborne microorganisms. MidthermUV brings this century-tested technology to air purification, delivering the same proven pathogen deactivation that has protected public health in water systems for generations.
Unlike emerging technologies with limited track records, UV-C air purification builds on a foundation of extensive scientific validation, regulatory approval, and continuous real-world performance across critical applications where failure is not an option.
UV-C Technology Timeline
UV-C technology first deployed for municipal water purification, establishing germicidal effectiveness against waterborne pathogens.
Cities worldwide adopt UV-C water treatment as regulatory bodies recognize its safety and effectiveness for public water supplies.
Hospitals and pharmaceutical manufacturers establish UV-C as the gold standard for sterile water production and infection control.
Food processing industry adopts UV-C for beverage and produce sanitization, expanding applications beyond water treatment.
MidthermUV brings century-proven UV-C technology to air purification, delivering the same molecular-level pathogen destruction to indoor environments.

Real-World Clinical Validation
Midtherm UV products translate this laboratory science into real-world protection. Our award-winning CT600 ceiling tile unit demonstrated exceptional performance in Professor Tony Fisher's independent clinical study at Aintree Hospital, achieving 84-93% pathogen reduction across four NHS patient rooms.
MidthermUV combines the complementary strengths of F7 filtration and UV-C technology: F7 filters excel at capturing larger particles, while UV-C actively destroys smaller pathogens at the molecular level. Independent testing has demonstrated that either technology alone achieves comparable pathogen reduction—but together, they deliver comprehensive air sanitisation across the full particle size spectrum without the airflow restrictions or frequent replacements associated with HEPA systems.
How it works
Our UV-C air purifiers employ an innovative single-reactor design that provides dual protection. Air enters and passes through an F7 filter that captures particles, bacteria, viruses, and allergens. The filtered air continues through the fan and into a UV-C reactor chamber where pathogens are destroyed. Crucially, the reactor features windows that allow UV-C light to continuously bathe the dirty side of the filter, preventing pathogen buildup on the filter surface.
This patented single-reactor, dual-function system damages the DNA and RNA of microorganisms at the molecular level—both on the filter surface (via windows) and in the airstream (as air passes through the reactor)—preventing reproduction and effectively neutralizing pathogens before clean air returns to the room.
Our units are designed to deactivate airborne pathogens in a single pass through the device, with effectiveness rates up to 99.999% depending on the speed setting.
All our units are designed to contain UV-C light completely within the device. They have been tested by leading NHS hospitals and found to be safe for use around people.
With no need for additional ventilation, our units result in huge energy savings. The MT250, for example, costs just 6p an hour to run.
High-tech but low maintenance, our units feature plug and play installation and Signify UV-C lamps with an average lifetime of 9,000 hours.
What pathogens does UV-C eliminate?
UV-C germicidal lamps are effective against a wide range of airborne pathogens:
NHS Tested and Approved
Our MT250 has been tested by a leading NHS hospital and found to be safe to be used amongst people. No UV-C light is allowed to escape from the unit. The efficacy testing was conducted by an NHS Lab, confirming the deactivation rates at various speed settings.
All our products are designed to be fully compliant with the new Draft NHS UVC Standard due for release imminently, ensuring they meet the highest safety and effectiveness standards.
